How to Access Advanced Search on the New Lexis Advance Home Page

Lexis Advance recently redesigned its homepage to streamline search functions. The search bar and content type box remain in the same place, but they have hidden the “advanced search” link under a “more options” tab.

Advanced search is one of the more powerful tools available to a legal researcher on Lexis. Options on this page allow a researcher to wield more control over their search, narrowing results from the outset and saving time (and, hopefully, money) in the research process.

In addition to the main search bar, the advanced search page displays a list of segments specific to a selected content type that can be searched by keyword. On the right-hand side of the page, Lexis helpfully provides a short list of the most commonly used Boolean connectors to assist in designing searches, and a link to an even longer list. Many of us are familiar with using quotation marks to search for a specific phrase, but other connectors like /s (within a sentence) or /p (within a paragraph) can be extremely useful ways to find sources that address two connected legal terms.
