New Book: The Faces of Poverty in North Carolina

The Law Library is pleased to announce that a new book, The Faces of Poverty in North Carolina: Stories from our Invisible Citizens, has been added to the collection. 

Written by UNC Law’s very own Gene Nichol, this book expands on the work that Nichol has been committed to throughout the entirety of his professional career. Nichol is the former director of the UNC Poverty Center from 2008-2015, and he currently works with the N.C. Research Poverty Fund.

This book serves as the culmination of Nichol’s travels across North Carolina over the past 6 years as he conducted hundreds of interviews with the poor in North Carolina. Nichol argues that poverty is North Carolina’s greatest challenge, and each chapter of his book reflects a different facet of this point. The stories of people from Charlotte to Wilkes County are shared in this book and demonstrates that, even in the most wealthy of cities, poverty is in plain sight for those who make the choice not to ignore it.
