HeinOnline provides access to pre-1980 legal periodical scholarship and the Federal Register from inception (1936) through 1980 with additional years being added. Materials are available in Adobe PDF format and print exact duplicates of the original paper copy.

Uncover Plus (formerly Carl Uncover) is an online search and delivery resource for research articles. The database includes 258,000 journals from a variety of fields. This may be of special interest to members of the faculty whose interests are interdisciplinary.

Uncover Reveal

Uncover Reveal is an electronic mail service that provides Tables of Contents of journal issues from a variety of disciplines. Uncover Reveal includes approximately 18,000 journals from a variety of fields. This service may be of special interest to members of the faculty whose interests are interdisciplinary.
Subscribers to the Reveal service set up a personal "profile" listing consisting of up to 50 journal titles which interest them. The Tables of Contents of these journals are automatically delivered to their email addresses each month. The library funds the basic Reveal service (the monthly search) for the faculty.

An additional feature of the Reveal service is the option of having articles faxed to you. There is a variable fee for each article, which includes a service charge and copyright royalty and appears to average between $12 and $20 per article faxed. Because most articles the service will identify are in journals owned by the Law Library or other university libraries, we have not activated this feature.

The first step is to identify journals whose Tables of Contents you wish to receive. In the appendix, there is a list of titles included in the Index to Legal Periodicals. You may choose up to 50 tittles from which to receive Tables of Contents. If there are titles not listed, please ask and we will determine if they are available in the Reveal Service.

The journal list can be seen at: http://www.ingenta.com.
If you are interested in using Uncover Reveal, please contact your library liaison.

Current Index to Legal Periodicals (CILP)

  • PDF - Users can print their own copy of the paper version before it arrives at the library by using the PDF version on our CILP page.
  • HTML version of CILP provide linked lists sorted by Subject with links to Westlaw and Lexis
  • HTML version with links directly from the table of contents with links to Westlaw and Lexis
  • ASCII text file that can be opened in all word processors

The Current Index to Legal Periodicals (CILP) provides timely topical access to over 500 legal publications 4 to 6 weeks before commercial legal periodical indexes such as ILP, CLI and LRI. Items published are organized within 100 relevant subject headings. Complete tables of contents of all journals indexed are included.

The Library receives an electronic version of the Current Index to Legal Periodicals. The Library prints it and has copies made. The latest weekly version of CILP can be found at: https://my.law.unc.edu/community/library/cilp/. This is a PDF file that is intended for printing and provides an exact duplicate of the familiar paper version. Faculty printing of the PDF file is permitted at no additional cost to the library.

Current and prior CILPs are archived at: https://my.law.unc.edu/community/library/cilp/. This URL also provides Web pages indexed by subject and tables of contents in addition to a text file that can be opened by any word processor. Viewing and printing PDF files require Adobe Acrobat Reader. This software has been installed on your computer here at the law school, however it may be necessary to download the software to access the CILP at home. The software is available free at: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.

For home access, you will be prompted for a name and password. It may be obtained from the Law Library Reference Desk 962-1194 or from your Law Library Liaison.

The library maintains an email notification list for the electronic CILP. You can receive a weekly email notice alerting you when the new issue of CILP is available on our library website. Please contact your library liaison to be added to this list.

A feature called SmartCILP is also available. Users can focus on their individual research interests by personalizing CILP. Each electronic subscriber creates a profile, which can include the broad practice areas, specific subject headings and journals they choose. This personalized version is delivered as a weekly email message clearly marked "SmartCILP". SmartCILP profiles can be easily changed, allowing subscribers to tailor it to their changing research needs. Please contact your library liaison for help in setting up a profile.

Faculty Alert provides citations to recently input information in any number of online databases. Most of the faculty searches to date have been set up to run monthly in the online component of Current Law Index which is primarily an index of law reviews. Printouts arrive in the library and are then placed in faculty mailboxes. We invite you to try this service to see if it is helpful. We can change, add or delete topics and add or delete participants at any time during the year. . If you have any questions please contact Nick Sexton, email: telephone: 843-7898
