Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is wireless networking?
The UNC-Chapel Hill Wireless Network allows you to connect your laptop to the campus network and the Internet from a variety of locations campus wide without having to plug in a data cable. All of the major libraries on the main campus and many other buildings currently have wireless access points. For a more complete list, click here. The Law School and the Law Library are now introducing wireless into our building in order to assess the demand and value of the resource in this environment.

Where is it available in the Law School?
Along with hard-wired network access that is already located throughout the building, wireless network access is now available in throughout the Law School and the Law Library:

Is wireless as fast as ethernet?
Keep in mind that wireless network access is slower than the hard-wired Ethernet access that is already available. It becomes progressively slower as more people use the access point. In addition, there are electric outlets available where most of the current Ethernet plugs have been installed. This includes all of the carrels in the Law Library.:

What else is necessary?
See the ITS instructions about getting started with campus networking. There are also instructions available on the Law School Student Intranet.

Help
If you have any problems or questions, please submit a Help Ticket to the Law School IT department.

Warnings
It is possible to accidently disrupt the network using wireless and Windows XP. If you cause any disruption, the university will stop your network access. Please follow these instructions to prevent the problem. .

  • If you use Wireless Networking on a laptop with Windows XP Home, you need to make sure Network Bridging is disabled. If Network Bridging is not disabled, network problems can exist.
  • To verify if Network Bridging is enabled:
  • Go to START, CONTROL PANEL, NETWORK AND INTERNET CONNECTIONS,
  • Click on NETWORK CONNECTIONS.
  • If you do not see Network Bridge, then you are fine, and you are done.
  • IF you DO see Network Bridge, right-click on the line which looks like: Network Bridge (Network Bridge) Network Bridge Enabled and click on Delete on the pop-up menu, select 'Yes' on the "Are you sure?" box, and all entries related to Network Bridge should disappear.
